Bottom-up Process

Cross-sector System Integration - a German built Success Factor

Intelligent home networks are cross-sector applications. System integration yields economic opportunities across industry and domain boundaries. The German industry is dominated by small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs), making it particularly important to ensure interoperability between the systems and to facilitate the connection of new devices. This raises investment security and creates rapid market acceptance for the systems. In turn, the innovation and competitiveness levels of German industry improves. It also makes it easier for new providers to develop tailor-made applications and services, in order to position themselves successfully in the market.

Joint System Solutions instead of Stand-alone Solutions

A range of national initiatives have been launched in the past. Most of these, however, were technology or industry-driven and generally took a "top-down" approach. In its "Smart Home + Building Certification Programme" project the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy has implemented a consistent "bottom-up" approach with no predetermined technologies. It is designed to link up the different sectors on an equal basis. The main focus is directed to companies and initiatives from the following five domains:

  • Energy management
  • Entertainment
  • Home/Building safety
  • Health/AAL/Wellness
  • Home automation (comfort)

The dialogue process permits the establishment of a cross-sector consensus and helps integrate further companies

Pioneers with Global Prospects

The VDE Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies has been running the programme together with its network and technology partners since 1 July 2012. In the first project phase, intensive alignment discussions were organised 35 major companies and innovative small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) which are active in the smart home market. The companies have specified their needs and agreed to commit themselves to working in a core group. The number of companies involved grew continuously in the run-up to the project conference in July 2013. The expansion process aimed at including further smart home domains is being continued initially with German and then subsequently with European companies.
